Shout out to an undergrad Linguistic Anthropology class, which gave me the idea to book the brilliant Deborah Tannen.

Interested in the emotional toll of the news cycle, I pitched, reported, and helped produce a profile of someone else who breathes that cycle—an amateur investigator who tracked every move of the Trump administration for an online audience.

I seniored this series, a video take on the Harper’s Index, at a time when changing supply chains and consumer habits made the economy difficult to picture. Did the research and writing on this, and even got 25 pounds of peanuts shipped to our animator—an emotional challenge for someone who is deathly allergic.

Researched and edited a script for this piece, and worked with a team of graphic designers to fit their brilliant vision. Nominated for the 2019 Emmy for Outstanding Graphic Design & Art Direction.

I helped a writer on my team flesh out the pitch and edit the script for this wonderfully light look at how the pandemic might influence pop culture (or our present vibe shift). Senior produced.

Had a blast using my experience living in China to edit documentary scripts on the country, and this one hit over 6M views on social, perhaps because the producer and I giggled endlessly after we realized we could structure the piece to mirror fables about witches.

I drew on my knowledge as a reporter in New Orleans to find the characters for this charming little piece, which swerves away from cliches about the city to get real. Senior produced.

When news outlets started covering the frequent disappearances of high-profile figures in China as if they were mysteries, I got frustrated once again by our orientalist view. I sought out an expert on how the government had deliberately changed the law to legalize these kinds of disapperances, and a smart producer helped me get it animated.

I pulled on my experience living in Hong Kong to edit what became a series of news pieces covering the protests as they escalated. An emotional roller coaster with an incredibly talented team. We were later nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Continuing Coverage of a News Story in a Newscast.

Had fun becoming a food writer to work on the VICE show “Counter Space.” I edited this script with its producer, and wrote introductions with the host.

Another piece in the “By the Numbers” series I seniored that shows how the format can fit a very different tone.

That time I helped conceive of a better way to hold a presidential forum and led a team that wrote the anchor intros, questions, and on-screen text.

I had a long-held dream to use AI to write a script about AI, and when GPT-3 came along, I alerted the brilliant Greg Walters who took my idea and ran with it.

As senior producer, I helped conceptualize the piece, edited the script, and oversaw production. I love how this smart piece wouldn’t work in any other format; it needs the footage it’s using.

The more our team learned about tear gas and its use, the more we felt we could produce a full feature film. As senior producer, I helped pull those varied ideas together into a tight explainer.

After an executive tried to kill what I thought was the most riveting look at fascism VICE had filmed since Charlottesville, I worked with the team to rewrite the script to eradicate the executive’s concern—that we were giving QAnon yet another platform. Proud of the edit, which calls out fascism and misinformation in ways that are clear and fair.

Senior produced this timely explainer on a movement to teach financial literacy to kids before they make the biggest financial decision of their lives: taking on student debt.

I worked side-by-side with a producer, doing research and conducting interviews, to create the sharpest argument we could around a death penalty newsline. Less an archival essay than an argumentative essay, delivered by a savvy comedian/professor.

I edited the voiceover for this documentary feature with correspondent Alzo Slade. Winner of the Hard News Feature category at the LA Press Club Awards. The piece is behind HULU’s paywall.

Was tickled that this script, which I wrote, was the second place winner of an LA Press Club Award for best Multimedia Package.

Worked with a producer to develop a personal emotional response to a news event into a tight, argumentative personal essay. I love working through ideas with other writers even before they draft, and this was a great example of what can come out of those conversations.
